We engineer membrane proteins!
Mravic lab uses protein design and integrative computational approaches to challenge our understanding of biomolecular structure, function, and physical chemistry.
We engineer synthetic membrane proteins based on chemical ‘rules’ which we hypothesize from bioinformatics, all-atom simulations, and molecular energy calculations. Doing so allows us to produce simple model molecules custom-made to challenge important biophysical principles underlying protein structure and activity in lipid. We also develop chemical biology tools targeting membrane proteins directly at their lipid-embedded regions.
Our research focuses on defining the complex molecular features transmembrane (TM) domains use to direct protein functional and structural states, as well as dissecting the active roles TM domains play in essential biological processes.
